Guidelines for Using Soil Amendments, Organic Manure and Chemical Fertilisers
- Application of organic manure at the rate of 10 t/ha is beneficial.
- Use of poultry manure (PM) which exceeds the rate of 10 t/ha is not advisable.
- Integrated use of organic manure and chemical fertiliser is more beneficial than using either type in isolation.
- Subsequent fertiliser applications should be done along the planting row and may be broadcast onto leaf bases. Avoid dropping fertiliser on the crown of the plant.
- Always ensure that soil is sufficiently moist at the time of and after fertiliser application
- Foliar fertiliser application is advisable only when deficiency symptoms are observed.

Guidelines for using soil amendments, organic manure and chemical fertilizers
- Dolomite application should be done 2 weeks before planting and incorporated well into the soil.
- Application of any organic manure at the rate of 10 t/ha is beneficial.
- Use of poultry manure (PM) which exceeds the rate of 10 t/ha is not advisable.
- Integrated use of organic manure and chemical fertiliser is more beneficial than using either type in isolation.
- Liming can be omitted if poultry manure is applied continuously.
- Basal N, P and K should be applied and incorporated into the soil at least 1 - 2 days before planting.
- Subsequent fertiliser applications should be done along the planting row and may be broadcast onto leaf bases. Avoid dropping fertiliser on the crown of the plant.
- Always ensure that soil is sufficiently moist after fertiliser application.
